Energy and Water Conservation Tips

Energy Conservation Tips

  • Using fans can make rooms feel five to ten degrees cooler while reducing your electricity bills.
  • Use a programmable thermostat on your air conditioning and a timer on your pool filter.
  • Use your washing machine and dishwasher early in the morning, late at night or weekends whenever possible.
  • On hot, sunny days if you close drapes, windows and doors on your home's sunny side to reduce solar heat build up.
  • Turn off lights and appliances that are not being used.
  • Set your air conditioner at 78 degrees or higher to save on your cooling costs.
  • Use Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, which last longer and use less electricity than incandescent bulbs.
  • Choose EnergyStar products when buying new appliances and you will save money and energy.
  • Using less energy helps protect the environment and saves you money.
  • Try a desert trick - when the outside air is dry and cooler than the air inside, hang a damp sheet over an open window to cool incoming breezes.
  • When running any kind of air conditioner, close the damper on your fireplace.  An open damper will pull hot air into your house.

Water Conservation Tips

  • Early morning is best for watering your lawn or garden.
  • When replacing your toilet, look for high-efficiency models that use less than 1.3 gallons of water per flush.
  • Try not to leave the tap running while you brush your teeth or shave.
  • Wash only full loads or set small loads to the appropriate water level.
