315/680 Area Code Permissive Dialing Begins
The New York State Public Service Commission approved an area code overlay in the 315 area code region serving all or part of eighteen Central NY counties. The Commission determined that the best way to meet demand for new telephone numbers in the region and minimize customer impact was to overlay a new area code (680) over the existing 315 area code. With the overlay, current customers (wireline or wireless) within the region keep the315 area code and seven digit number already assigned to them. New telecommunication services will be assigned a new seven digit number with the 680 area code
Once the overlay is established, all calls within the overlay region will require ten digit dialing, meaning that the three digit area code plus the seven digit number will always have to be dialed when making a call to a 315 or 680 number. Calls to numbers outside of these area codes will require a 1 in front of the ten digit number.
A permissive dialing period for the new area code began on March 12, 2016. The permissive dialing period will allow people time to get used to a new 10 digit dialing pattern. During the eleven month permissive dialing period, calls using either seven digits or ten digits (area code plus seven digit number) will be allowed. Starting February 2017, all callers must use the new dialing pattern to complete calls.
